Stay Healthy During the Holidays!

12/24/2019

Picture
The end of the year is already here, but that doesn't mean you need to be lax about your health and wellness. Take this time to celebrate your health just as much as you would celebrate any of your favorite holidays!

Happy December! We hope you had a wonderful fall and have settled into a wonderful holiday season. There is so much to look forward to this time of year. But with the extra addition of stress during the holiday, it's so easy to get sick or throw your body out of whack to the point where you're in constant pain. Those few tweaks and points of pain can put a damper on all of your holiday plans. It's so easy for that holiday stress to turn into physical pain. Stress, worry, being very busy, poor diet, and not enough rest can place a lot of instant pain and damage on your back and well being during the holidays. While you are picking out the next holiday movie, making your holiday plans, or starting to travel home for the holidays, keep these tips in mind.

Never let your health and wellness be the last thing you pay attention to this holiday season. Spread your holiday cheer down to your toes, and your body will thank you for it!

  • Try and stay active! Keep to your workouts and don't let the holidays be your excuse to hibernate on the couch. Get up and get moving! For those of you who regularly exercise, be mindful of the change in weather, your diet, and your sleep schedule. Adjust accordingly so you don't harm yourself during your workouts and continue to fuel yourself properly. For those of you who aren't accustomed to too much exercise, make sure you talk with your chiropractor and physician about what kind of activity is best for you this time of year.
  • It can get cold here in the Lowcountry, and those lower temperatures can wreak havoc on your body. You can easily strain or hurt some of your most important muscles when not properly kept warm. During outdoor decorating, activity, or workout, it's very easy to hurt these muscles without even realizing it. Dress properly; layers are the best to keep your temperature comfortable and still be functional. Always warm up your muscles before any kind of workout or strenuous activity outdoors.
  • The holiday season is here, which is so exciting. You might be spending long hours in the car traveling, putting up decorations, or helping with some extra heavy lifting around the house. During this busy time practice proper lifting, bending, and twisting techniques. When driving long distances, make sure you stay hydrated and take frequent breaks to stretch and keep your blood flowing. Investing in a lumbar pillow can also help maintain a healthy back during long road trips.
  • Take advantage of this time of year and remember to rest and relax. Take your health and wellness to the next level during this joyous time. Make sure to get plenty of sleep and relax with your loved ones. It will do both your body and peace of mind good to make time to rest. Your body will have time to heal, it will be able to protect itself better from the cold and flu season, and be more resilient to wear and tear.
  • It is so tempting this time of year to indulge in your favorite food and drink. Sugary, processed, and carb-heavy foods can put a lot of stress and strain on every part of the body. These foods can leave your body vulnerable to injury, inflammation, and bloating. If you do partake in holiday drinking, drink responsibly and stay hydrated. As much as you can, stick to your healthy diet and eat your favorite treats in moderation.

Your health and wellness need to be celebrated and cared for as much as any holiday tradition. It is worth taking the time to invest in, care for, and protect. You only get one body, so we encourage you to take these tips to heart. We are so excited to see you in the new year, and can't wait to start a positive and healthy trip around the sun with you. From all of us at Wellness Plus, stay happy and well this holiday season!

Chiropractic Care and Where To Begin

Do you know that you do not need a doctor's referral to see a chiropractor? If you are suffering from pain in your neck, shoulders, back, or joints, a chiropractor may be the best option for you. It may be difficult at first to find a chiropractor that works well with you, but here at Wellness Plus, we do our best to keep our clients happy and healthy!

So what are the things you need to know about chiropractic care if you have never received it before? Continue reading this blog to find out!

Find a Chiropractor that Cares
Finding a chiropractor that cares about you and your health is one of the most important things to take into consideration when looking. A proper chiropractor will do an initial assessment using x-rays to check the status of your spine. If you see one who did not take x-rays, this may not be the chiropractor you need.

Treatment Takes Time
Understand that your individual care plan will be different from others. Depending on the shape your spine is in, or how much pain you are suffering from, the length of your care plan will be specific to your needs.

Side Effects Can Happen
Just like with any other care, chiropractic may come with side effects. The side effects may include soreness, headache, or stiffness. However, these are temporary and usually only last a day.

Chiropractic and the Hips

When it comes to alignment of the spine, often times people only think of the vertebrae that make up this very important aspect of our beings. What about our hips? How does the spine and chiropractic treatments affect our hips? Well, let us explain.

Proper Alignment

The alignment of our spine is important for keeping our body able and functioning. If our spine is out of alignment, it can cause pain in other parts of our body such as our hips and knees. When the spine is not aligned properly, our hips tend to be uneven. This means that one side can be higher or lower than the other. This misalignment can cause a person to walk with an abnormal gate, have pain in the hips and knees, or be uncomfortable in general.

Chiropractic Adjustment

In order to combat this misalignment, one can choose to see a chiropractor. If so, a chiropractor will adjust a patient over a series of appointments to regain proper alignment. This will align the hips back to their proper place and remove any discomfort the patient was having.

If you or someone you know is having pain in their hips or joint, tell them to come on in to Wellness Plus. We would love to see what we can do to help!

A Chiropractic Adjustment: What To Expect

If you have never seen a chiropractor before, the thought of getting your spine adjusted can be a scary thought. The manipulation of the spine seems daunting, but when done by a professional can be a safe alleviation of pain.

An adjustment refers to the manipulation of the vertebrae of the spine. Sometimes these spinal cord protectors move out of alignment and cause discomfort and pain. The job of a chiropractor is to find those irregularities, or subluxations, and coerce them back into place through various chiropractic techniques.

An adjustment involves high velocity thrusts applied to the vertebra with careful management by the chiropractor. This will cause a sound that signals the release of oxygen within the joint, alleviating the pressure and discomfort. Most clients describe a feeling of relief after an adjustment.

How can Chiropractic Help Neuralgia

1/15/2019

Being a sensitive part of what makes up our body, our nerves need to be taken care of. Nerves are the pain receptors of our body and can easily be irritated, damaged, or compressed. Neuralgia is the term associated with a damaged nerve causing a severe burning or stabbing pain somewhere in the body. The causes for such pain are aging, disease, and infection.

If the pressure on the nerve is caused by a misalignment in the spine, the use of chiropractic care can benefit someone who is suffering from neuralgia.

Chiropractic cannot cure severe cases of neuralgia caused by disease or infection, but if the neuralgia is caused by a misalignment in the spine, chiropractic care can benefit the client.

Are you suffering from nerve pain and need relief? Our team at Wellness plus will do our best to provide you with phenomenal chiropractic care, so make an appointment today!

Lower Back Pain: Chiropractic Treatment

Lower Back Pain: Chiropractic Treatment

Pain in the lower back can cause aches and pains throughout the entire body. When alignment of the spine is off, the nerves in the body can end up pinched. Core Chiropractic treatment is best suitable for this kind of pain in the lower back.

Spinal manipulation is made of high-velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to the problem vertebrae in order to improve function within the area. The best time to start chiropractic treatment of lower back pain is during early signs. Chiropractic is best used alongside other treatments for the spine.

Mobilization of the spine is more of a low-velocity manipulation where there is focus on muscles and joints as well. This technique has a goal to increase the range of motion within the problem areas.

When combating lower back pain, consider the chiropractic work of Wellness Plus! Our professionals will handle you with care and provide you with the best treatment around!

Chiropractic: Alignment of the Spine

11/30/2018

When discussing the spine, the term alignment is referring to the correlation between the head, shoulders, spine, hips, knees, and ankles. The proper alignment for these structures are known and studied by experienced chiropractors. The objective of chiropractic is to achieve and maintain the proper alignment of the structures in one's body.

When the proper alignment is achieved, the structures of the spine are under less stress, resulting in relief from pain and other stress factors. When visiting a chiropractor for the first time, a new patient undergoes x-ray examinations to allow an inside look to pin-point problem areas.

When a care plan is made, the patient comes into the chiropractic office regularly for adjustments of the spine. These adjustments provide relief from pain and slowly fix problems in the alignment of their spine.

If you believe that a chiropractor can help ease the pain you are experiencing, come into the Wellness Plus office today!

The Activator Method in Chiropractic

11/15/2018

Picture
Being a part of the most researched chiropractic techniques, we thought it was best to touch on the Activator Method and tell you a few things about it!

Its efficiency is supported through research, unlike any other instrument adjusting technique! With research to back it, and clinical trials to support it, the Activator Method has proven its importance within the Chiropractic field. In the hands of an experienced and trained Chiropractor, this tool can assist the client in achieving and maintaining healthy alignment of the spine.

The handheld device is used to deliver a small amount of pressure to a joint or vertebra in the intention of aligning it correctly. Seeing as the force is sent quickly, the muscles have less time to tense, therefore allowing the Activator to freely manipulate the intended joint or vertebra. This tool can be used alongside manual manipulation of the spine in order to provide the client with the best treatment specific to them.

Next time you come into Wellness Plus, ask us about Activators and if they will be a part of your care plan! We look forward to seeing you!

How Stretching Benefits your Chiropractic Care

How Stretching Benefits your Chiropractic Care

The spine is held in place by the surrounding muscles and ligaments. It is important, as we age, to keep muscles as flexible as possible since they have a tendency to tighten over the years.

The tightening of muscles cause the body to no longer maintain symmetry. This can be seen in the raise of one side of the body. When stretching is used alongside chiropractic, the muscles within the body, specifically surrounding the spine, relax and begin to align with the adjustments made by the chiropractor.

Stretching alongside chiropractic care can also improve the range of motion within the body as well as flexibility. When you are more flexible, you are less likely to be injured as long as you continue to listen to your body and understand your limits.

Muscles are where we hold our stress, so if you are adding stretching into your routine, you are combatting your stress effectively!

We focus on your overall wellness here at Wellness Plus. Our objective is to help you live a healthy life alongside your chiropractic appointments. If you are looking for a reliable chiropractor, schedule your appointment today!

Chiropractic and Yoga

Chiropractic and Yoga

Picture
Chiropractic can benefit patients in many ways, but what can be used along with chiropractic to better the healing process? One of the most popular answers is yoga. So how exactly does yoga help with the chiropractic process? Here is what you need to know;

Within the United States, multiple studies have been conducted, one of which the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health proved a reduction in the pain patients were feeling in their lower back, as well as depression, after practicing yoga along side chiropractic for six months.

The important thing to remember when applying yoga alongside chiropractic is that you as the patient need to be open with your chiropractor about what positions of yoga you are practicing as well as the frequency. Just like a standard care plan, your medical professional needs to know the activities you are participating in to provide you the best level of care.

At Wellness Plus, we want you to be a part of the best care possible. That is why if you are experiencing any pain, make an appointment today so we can start your care plan as soon as possible.
